A single word — chosen for your life, brushed by hand, then given depth in natural stone and light. Not a print. Not a reproduction. A framed work of calligraphy that exists once, for one person.
Begin Your CommissionAdornment is not decoration. It makes the intention visible.
Gemgraphy began with a calligrapher named Moe, and with one question: how can the breath of a single character be expressed more fully — not on the flat of the page, but in space, in material, in light?
Her answer grew out of Japanese calligraphy but did not stay inside it. She calls the wider practice Sōshoku-sho — decorative calligraphy, an art that reinterprets the cultural essence of the brush. Gemgraphy is its core: a hand-brushed character, given dimension with natural stone, genuine gold leaf (and silver leaf where the composition calls for it), and carefully placed light.
The stones are not ornament laid on top. They are the intention of the word, made something you can see. To face a single character, Moe says, is to face oneself. Gemgraphy is that meeting — held in ink, stone, and light, and made to hang on a wall you live beside.

It starts with a conversation over Zoom. Your story, your turning point, the reason you want a piece at all. Nothing is brushed yet. First, we listen.
In a Private Design Consultation, we translate your commission — the person, the moment, the words you hold — into the direction of the piece: its symbol, its materials, its design. The thinking is captured in a concept sheet that guides everything that follows.
From the hearing and the concept, a single word is chosen — for you, not from a catalogue. Moe brushes it once, in genuine sumi ink. A living gesture, made in one breath. It cannot be redone identically, and it is not meant to be.
Natural stone and metal leaf are composed along the strokes, and the piece is built to hold light — one presence by day, another when lit. The word becomes an object. Framed, and complete.
The Maker
Moe is a calligrapher and the founder of Sōshoku-sho (decorative calligraphy) and Gemgraphy, working since 2015. She built a three-layer body of work: Sōshoku-sho as the wider genre, Gemgraphy as its artistic core, and Beadsgraphy® as the hands-on way in. Her belief is plain — to write a single character is to face one's inner self, and adornment exists to make the intention within the character visible.
A piece takes six to ten weeks. It carries the work of two hands — the calligrapher's, and the designer's who composes stone and light around the stroke. Before either begins, there is a Private Design Consultation made only for you. The character is brushed once. There is no identical second.
The price also carries a purpose. Takumi Collective exists so that a maker can live by their craft. Commissioning a piece is how that work stays possible — how a calligrapher keeps writing, and how the next character gets made.
